Dr Suresh S, Director of MediScan from Chennai (also member of WHO SEARO Expert group for birth defects surveillance and prevention) was resource faculty of Obstetric workshop. The workshop started with lectures on basics in Ultrasound (physics, probes – types, movements) and identification of structures based on echogenicity. He explained with examples the ‘Attenuation Ladder’ of various structures wherein liver/spleen (echogenic) represented middle of the ladder. Of importance is the booklet he gave out namely ‘II Trimester Obstetric Scan (7+3=10)’ which he has authored along with the MediScan team. He highlighted 7+3=10 concept and importance of each step for obstetric scan. Using Vimedix, he demonstrated various anatomical structures visible in different planes and measurements. He familiarised us with the ISUOG (International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology) guidelines with checklist, 1st trimester Aneuploidy screening and risk assessment (Down`s syndrome), Fetal growth anomalies and distributed hand-outs with screening images, growth velocity curves and others for interpretation and detection. He recommended Targeted scan for high risk categories to avoid congenital defects e.g. limb reduction defects which is also of Medico-legal importance. He also touch-based on doppler for Intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) and Placenta & liquor evaluation. Through-out workshop Dr Shannon Francesca Fernandes – Assistant Professor OBG, FMCI assisted all of us with materials and practicals. For the greater part of workshop, each one of us tried hands-on for various cut-planes, Nuchal Translucency (NT) measurement etc. This was my most memorable experience of USIMCON INDIA 2018 with lots of take-home messages.
